Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) STEM Academy

APL’s STEM Academy is a unique opportunity for middle and high school students (grades 8–12) to increase both their knowledge of and interest in STEM-related college majors and careers by taking after-school courses (5:00–6:30 p.m. ET). Review the course catalog to learn more about STEM Academy offerings. Courses are offered based on instructor availability, so not all courses are offered each session.

Biophysics Research for Baltimore Teens (BRBT)*

Biophysics Research for Baltimore Teens paid internships provide hands-on research opportunities for Baltimore City high school students at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Internships are five days a week for six weeks, from mid-June through mid-August.

Engineering Innovation

Engineering Innovation Pre-College Programs allow you to explore your passions and see your future as an engineer, along with earning 3 JHU college credits. Residential, Commuter, and Online programs available. Engineering Innovation awards need-based scholarships to commuting or online programs only; summer programs run variable times June – August.

Eligible Baltimore City Public Schools students may apply to the Johns Hopkins Summer Jobs Program & Youth Works Partnership. This partnership includes access to a full tuition scholarship, payment for participation at an hourly wage, and access to a pre-orientation course called Engineering FUNdamentals.

Engineering FUNdamentals is an optional pre-orientation experience available to local and commuter students participating in EEI, SEE or BMEI courses. During this pre-course experience, students will meet fellow students and engage in orientation activities like campus tours and a scavenger hunt, lunch on campus in the dining halls, cohort building and review of key math and science topics to prepare for their pre-college course.

Immersive Summer Program for Education, Enrichment, and Distinction (ISPEED) in Biomedical Engineering

ISPEED in BME is a residential, four-week summer program for talented high-school students who are passionate about exploring concepts in biomedical engineering. Stipend included and all costs covered, four weeks in July.

The Johns Hopkins Internship in Brain Science Program (JHIBS): Project Pipeline Baltimore*

CTY Baltimore Emerging Scholars

Baltimore Emerging Scholars (BES) is CTY’s local enrichment program for Baltimore students who show high academic potential. The CTY BES School Year and Summer programs reach nearly 1,000 students annually, offering interdisciplinary courses in high-interest topics that are not typically taught in traditional curricula.

Tower of Power

A Middle School National Engineering Week Challenge! The Johns Hopkins University’s Whiting School of Engineering celebrates National Engineers Week by inviting schools to build a tower from spaghetti and marshmallows. The top five winning teams across all schools will be invited to JHU’s Tower of Power event to build their towers again and compete with undergraduate students, alumni, and faculty teams (optional).

Maryland MESA (Math, Engineering, Science Achievement) is an exciting and engaging after-school program for students in grades 3–12 designed to spark their interest in STEM education and STEM careers. Ingenuity Project

The Ingenuity Project, a non-profit organization, is a joint effort of the Baltimore City Public School System, the Abell Foundation, and Baltimore’s science and mathematics community. Their middle school program is a full-time citywide program offered to academically advanced city students at select schools. Ingenuity offers advanced mathematics and science classes during the school day.
